The magic square

The magic square — vefk, wafq — is the rare symbol every tradition in this archive builds the same way and explains differently. A grid; numbers or letters placed so every row, column, and diagonal shares one sum. The word means "agreement" — named for that equality. What changes across the record is what the equal sums are made to hold.
¶ How it is built
The governing rule is arithmetic: the numbers in every row, column, and diagonal must sum to the same total, and it is from this equalising that the practice takes its name. Squares are classed by size — 3×3 (müselles), 4×4 (murabba), 5×5 (muhammes), and up — and split into odd-order (3, 5, 7, 9) and even-order (4, 6, 8).
The values are rarely arbitrary. They are drawn by abjad reckoning from a name: in one worked case the names "Yūsuf" and "Nasūh" are summed to 310, and that number fills the square; in another, a triple square is built from the abjad value of the divine name "Ḥayy." Placement follows intention — even numbers (müzevvecât) to the four corners for benevolent aims, odd numbers (müfredât) for the reverse.
The 5×5 square shows the mathematics cleanly: every line sums to 65 — the centre number 13 times the order 5 — and any two cells symmetric about the centre sum to 26, twice that centre. And the ink is fixed by tradition: musk and saffron ground in rosewater, the same recipe across all havas writing, with incense counted indispensable.
¶ Four traditions, one grid
Chinese origin — the Lo Shu
The record traces the square to ancient China: the figure known as Lo Shu, which legend says the Emperor Yü discovered by the Yellow River around 2200 BCE. It is judged highly probable that every square built on the equal-sum principle ultimately descends from it.
Islamic havas — the systematised square
In the Islamic tradition the square becomes a discipline. Of interest to the Arabs before Islam — thought to have reached them from the Indians or Sabians — it was formalised by Thābit ibn Qurra, who showed how to build tables of 16, 25, 36 and more cells; the earliest Islamic examples appear in Jābir ibn Ḥayyān and the Ikhwān al-Ṣafā. Here the square is named by element (earth, air, fire, water) or by planet (sun, moon).
Grimoire — the pentacle as gematria
The Key of Solomon builds the same logic in Hebrew. The Third Pentacle of Saturn uses a square of five — twenty-five letters; add unity and you reach twenty-six, the numerical value of IHVH, the Tetragrammaton. It is ringed by a verse of Psalm 72 of exactly twenty-five letters, whose gematria, added to the value of the name Elohim, matches the square's own total. Same equal-sum grid, encoding the divine name by number.
Turkic folk — the sign without the sum
The Turkic record shares the deeper premise — that deliberate marks amplify power, that "symbols are drawn to increase magical force" (TB p.120) — but the registered passages carry no grid, no cell, no number-sum. The calculated square appears here as a specifically havas layer laid over an older, non-numerical instinct. The arithmetic is not in this witness, and is not supplied from outside it.

Three traditions fill the same grid with three names for the same conviction: that number is not neutral. China reads it as cosmic order, Islam as the abjad of a name, the grimoire as the letters of God. The Turkic record holds the instinct without the arithmetic — which is itself the finding.

Why do the rows all add to the same number?
That equality is the square — the word "vefk" means "agreement," named for it. In the 5×5 case every line sums to 65, and the structure is so regular that the total can be derived from the centre number alone (DV p.24). The mathematics is the point; the meaning is hung on it.
Is the magic square the same as a sudoku?
Structurally related, historically not. Both are constraint grids of numbers, but the magic square is a talismanic object — the values carry the abjad of a name or the gematria of a divine word, and the grid is worn or carried, not solved for its own sake (IA p.197).
Did magic squares really come from China?
The record says so, and treats it as highly probable rather than certain: the Lo Shu is named as the likely ancestor, reaching the Islamic world by way of India or the Sabians (DV pp.12, 24; IA p.197). The archive reports the claim at the confidence the source gives it.
